Paper Animations

Here are some animations related to paper to give me some inspiration, whether they're about paper, look like paper or use paper.

National Geographic Channel ID - Kim Yeon Jin

These two animations is maybe the style our group is going for, of a 3D modelled paper city. I like Kim Yeon Jin's idea of having his city foldout and start expanding, from small flowers to skyscrapers. He also has a lot of interactions within his environment such as the cars, birds and planes.

Sketch City Series - Obscure Object Film

I really like this clip has they use several interesting camera angles. And I like how their people are like newspaper cutouts.

The London Paper Advert - Chris Payne

Here are some more animations using newspaper. I like how the text on the newspapers give the buildings an interesting texture. Chris Payne's animation is 2D and much more sketchy.

Press life of Mariola K. - Zuzanna Dabrowska

Where as the Zuzanna Dabrowska creates a literal 3D newspaper city, using stop motion animations. 

She Farted and Created the World - Scott Coello

I really like Scott Coello's concept of using completely recycled paper for his animation. He basically used anything he could find and made something really interesting out of it.

Black Cat Crossing - M.Sander, D.Beckstein, P.Kayser, M.Ritter

Here is a humorous animated short film following the journey of an old lady witnessing several odd incidents. It looks like they use several programs to animate the different aspects, and all the layers give the animation a lot of depth. 

Take This Spell from Me - Martin Speide

I also love this music video as it's very stylised, using simple shapes and bold colours in an effective way to animate the changes of a forest throughout the year.

Paperdoll - V.Guimarães, K.Caldararu, F.Paolo and A.Frank

And to evolve further the idea of using paper, I found these to lovely pieces of origami animation. In the Paperdoll it's interesting how a small tear eventually transforms into hundreds of paper swans.

The Raider - Kuong Lin Chen

And I think Kuong Lin Chen takes origami animation to another level, where she animations a whole performance between some amazing origami figures. And her use of bold and contrasting colours is very effective.

Contemporary Urban Design

I found this book in the library and thought it had some nice references of a contemporary city. 

I particularly like this shot of looking up at the sky from below. The huge sky scrapers against the blue sky creates a nice composition

The blue blocks look a a bit like dominoes I thought, which could be another idea to our environment. 

Paper Cities

Here is some research on paper cities which other people have made.

This was created by some one on skyscrapercity.com forums, where they created a whole city out of mini paper models. The proportions and layout of the city looks very accurate and printing out the textures of the buildings give a nice affect. I also like the colours of his models and how he populated his city with mini cars too.

Caleb Beyers

Here it seems like Caleb Beyers is not concentrating on layout or texture but what the buildings themselves look like. I like how he uses interesting shapes where not every building is a solid block, but have steeples, uneven rooftops and cylinders. And I think his paper city looks even better lit up in the dark, as the arrangement and shape of his windows work really well together.

Paper City, The Non

This is from the album art of The Non. I really like the sketchy style of it, where the buildings are kept simple and textured with rough lines. I also like the basic style of the trees, and how they added little details to the city like a crane and electricity lines.

I could think of added bridges and art sculptures..

..or  combining a mixture of different medias.

Hattie Newman

This is an installation made by Hattie Newman for WonderClub's production of 'Juniper Tree' by Brothers Grim. I like how she made smaller houses rather than skyscrapers, as it gives her environment a cosy feel. 

Pushing it further..

Jeff Nishinaka

These are the works of Jeff Nishinaka, a paper sculptor who I think brings a whole new meaning to paper art. Using light and shadow, and a great attention to detail he creates truly amazing 3D sculptors from just paper!

The Finishing Touch, P.Williams

The Finishing Touch is a performance and installation created by P.Williams, where a cardboard city is destroyed by a several disasters such as a giant sea monster. He quotes that the purpose of the installation is "about rooting for the tragedy, the storm, the wildfire, earthquake or tsunami and hoping there is some justice in absolute destruction". I like his idea of adding a light hearted performance to represent something quite serious. 

Jean Shin

Here is an interesting concept where Jean Shin stacks hundreds of scratch cards together. The patterns and colours on each scratch card when put together gives quite a cool effect. I also like how they're sort of promoting recycling with a playful aspect.

Gorilla Suits

I wasn't satisfied with my design and wanted to take it further by putting Pocahontas in a gorilla suit. Below are images of children in gorilla suits and of actual gorillas to get an idea of how it would look.

Here's an idea of what her suit would look like. I wanted it to look handmade and patchy, as the idea is her grandmother made it for her. So the belly would be covered with different materials and patterns similar to the images below.
