Kings and Queens - 30 Seconds to Mars

I think this music video is visually beautiful as I find its filmed like a movie rather than a music video. I love how it's filmed at night to show the flashing lights of the city and one of my favourite shots is when the sun is setting, leaving an orange glow in the background showing only the silhouettes of cyclists and band members.

Two Weeks - Grizzly Bear, directed by Gabe Askew

I like this video as it is much more stylised where they use a combination of objects and cut outs. It's interesting how the camera pans across to the different environments, and the cutouts are on strings like a puppet show. I also like the beginning where the lights turn on in a spiral and illuminate the first scene.

Flying Lotus - Kill Your Co-workers

Here, the artist uses only geometrical shapes and lines, which I think creates a playful environment where the objects and people look like toys. I quite like how the video is violent but in a light hearted playful way. I also like the way the blood disperses and falls into cubes.

Attractive - Eatliz

Directed by Yuval Nathan and Merav Nathan, this music video is a combination of 2D and 3D animation, stop motion and live action. Using so many techniques, I think creates a really nice an original style. 

Artist Inspirations

Machinarium, Adolf Lachman

Sticking to the idea of mechanical animation, here are some concept artwork that I admire and could be inspired by. Adolf Lachman's work for the point-and-click adventure game Manchinarium in particular is a favourite, as although it's very stylistic and cartoon-like, the immense amount of detail towards the colouring of the metal makes it seem almost realistic. And this reminds me a lot of Hayao Miyazaki's work, on Howl's Moving Castle. They both bring a 2d piece of art to life by giving it a stunning amount detail on colour, texture and light.

Initial Ideas

Rube Goldberg Machine

When being first introduced to the brief I really liked the concept of Honda's The Cog advert, Peter Fischli and David Weiss' The Way Things Go  and  OK Go's music video of This Too Shall Pass where a series of objects cause a domino effect in either physical or chemical reactions. They closely resemble a Rube Goldberg Machine, where a simple task is over complicated with several chain reactions.

Unlike the other examples where they consist of several unrelated objects, Honda keeps to a specific theme of using only car parts and I quite like this idea, as it relates to their company personally and I could use this in my project my choosing an environment and using objects related to that specific environment.
